How have I not reviewed Mint Cafe in Sliema before! Everyone seems to love it but I had only been once last year and as it’s not within 3 minutes of my office I just never made the 10 minute journey again. How sorry I am for my laziness!
Joe and I had a morning off together yesterday so popped along here for lunch and I’m pretty sure I’m now going to be eating there most days! It’s a strange kind of concept which is apparently a typical style in New Zealand- they don’t have a fixed menu but instead have fresh produce delivered daily and make up dishes depending on what is fresh and seasonal. Their dishes are displayed in glass counters, you go up to order and can take away or sit inside or out.
They say they’re a waterfront cafe and you can certainly see the sea however they’re on the far side of the road so there is a busy road, another cafe and a lot of pavement between your table and the water but it’s pretty none-the-less.
You go up to the counter, decide and order what you want, you’re given a wooden table number and then you sit down and wait! I don’t mind this however when we had finished our food (but not our drinks!) and wanted dessert, we went up to order the dessert and our plates, number and only half finished drinks were taken away by the time we got back- it was only about 40 seconds! This was pretty disappointing as I had paid €3.20 for a smoothie (Strawberry Heaven) and only got to drink half of it- something to definitely consider if you want dessert! Leave someone guarding the table!
The food was absolutely incredible. I went for a paprika chicken and tzaziki wrap, the half size was about €3.50 and it was enormous! Filled with thinly cut paprika chicken, cucumber, lettuce, tzaziki and carrot with a lettuce side salad. Joe went for the potato and Spanish chorizo gratin which was absolutely incredible. I loved my wrap but I do wish I’d gone for the gratin as it was just so hearty!
We then shared a dark chocolate panna cotta which came in a drinking glass with a crushed flake on top. I’ve never had panna cotta before and OH MY GOD. It was absolutely the most amazing thing I have ever tasted! It would definitely have been too much for me on my own so was the perfect size for two sharing.
The staff are very friendly and helpful which is great, I love the green and chocolate brown decor, I love the fresh food and they even have a number of gluten free and diabetic friendly items! Definitely keep an eye on your table if you need to get up but haven’t finished and whilst it’s great that the food is fresh and varied, it’d be a little disappointing if there was a dish you particularly loved but I’m sure firm favourites make regular appearances!
