An Urban Sunset in Sliema, Malta

My favourite way to watch the sunset is as it dips directly into the sea, but the sunset in Malta is pretty special wherever you get to see it from. Recently I spent an evening on a penthouse terrace in Sliema and despite there being just a sea of buildings all the way to the horizon, the sky still lit up brilliantly as the sun went down.

Just before the sun began to set, this adorable little rainbow appeared above the buildings, just as it looked like a storm was rolling in. The rain never came (thankfully!) but I'm so pleased with this quick capture. Thanks to my new colleague Elise for spotting it!

Cloudy Sunset in Sliema

Clouds can make or break a sunset,. I learned from my 5 years of sunset chasing in Malta that a little cloud makes a sunset a thousand times more interesting than when there is no cloud, as it really gives the sunlight something to illuminate and they catch and reflect the colours so intensely, however too much cloud can entirely ruin the effect and blanket out anything pretty. This day, it was just right. The clouds make for an interesting mix of colours and textures strewn across the sky.

Malta: A Whole Island of Perfect Sunsets

It's nice to know that pretty much wherever you are on this island, all you have to do is look up at the right time and you can catch a truly breathtaking sunset. Even if your life is too busy to take the time out to go somewhere, pack a picnic and chill whilst the sun goes down, everyone has time to stop for 5 minutes and just look up.
