Today has been intense. Woke up at 7am (not a usual occurrence on a Sunday, let me tell you!) in order to go hiking with my work colleagues and our partners. We got dropped at Xemxija and hiked along the coastline all the way to Mellieha bay. I think someone mentioned we travelled around 6km! I used to love walking as a kid and it turns out I still really do! There were a few hairy moments that I didn’t love- one case of going up a steep hill that was very gravelly and hard to get any purchase on and one case of coming down a similarly steep and slippery hill, and one wide ravine we had to jump across, only to find the way blocked and have to jump back over it. These I did not love at all.
For some reason when we had to make it over the ravine the second time it was much worse than the first. I knew I could do it but my body was just not cooperating! My head started spinning a bit and my legs turned to jelly, but Roberta gave me a hand across and my manager was ready on the other side to grab me so I made it over alive.
The rest of the hike was absolutely breathtaking. Turns out Malta is pretty green in the right areas at the right time of year. Of course in Summer everything just burns to a crisp but now its cooling somewhat and we’re having the occasional light rainfall some vegetation is starting to show its face. Unless you have spent time in Malta and experienced the lack of trees, grass and greenery you may not fully appreciate just how incredible these views are, although I’m sure anyone would agree they’re lovely!
I think there was talk of making this a monthly event for work. As much as I enjoyed it I’m a little on the fence about doing more, simply because I think the others would want to go on more testing terrain and I really hate worrying about falling and/or having to rely on others for help too much, but I’m so glad to have seen a part of the island I otherwise would never have found.
We stopped for a short break early on and around 11:30 we stopped for lunch and to rest our little legs. Some of the guys even built a fire and toasted marshmallows which was cute, although with the temperature still around 25oC+ and being so hot from walking I kept well away from the extra heat!
