Malta doesn’t have ‘drugstores’ or ‘pharmacies’ like I’m used to from the UK, where they’re filled with different makeup brands, from cheap as chips to super high end. The few highstreet makeup brands that are available here are usually old, out of date and way over priced. However, Essence is different. Originally a German brand, they create quality makeup items for an absolute bargain price. You could buy TWO ITEMS, pay with a €5 note and get change. I’m not kidding. Their stuff is great and the price point make them a perfect gift idea in Malta, whether it’s for a friend, colleague, or a stocking filler.
The branding may be a little ‘young’ so it’s clearly aimed at teens and young women just getting into makeup, but branding aside, their products are really good value for money, so there is no age limit on who can enjoy these.
I’m not being paid or asked to write this, I genuinely love Essence makeup and think they’re a great, affordable gift idea in Malta. I’ve tried something from pretty much all the product lines they offer- perfume, nail polish, eye shadow, foundation, blush, bronzer- you name it, they do it! I’m not saying every single item was fantastic, some of it just didn’t work for me, but I’ve loved most items and the quality cannot be grumbled at, at all.
Prices do vary depending on where you’re buying it, but in general we’re talking between €1.70 and €2.50 for a nail polish, €3 to €6 for a foundation, €2 to €4 for a blusher or bronzer. This is seriously cheap! Their perfumes come in quite girlie childish looking bottles, but the big size is €7 and the more sophisticated, bag friendly smaller bottles are €3.70 for crying out loud. SUCH A BARGAIN!
Personal Favourite Gift Ideas in Malta
My personal favourite bits are the nail polishes and perfumes.
The nail polishes are the fastest drying I’ve ever tried, are basically FREE they’re so cheap and they come in the biggest range of colours I’ve ever seen.
The perfumes are comparable to brands that sell them for x10 the price point. They have a good range of scents from fruity, to citrus, or musky and range from €3 for a small bottle to €7 for the bigger size. My absolute favourites are ‘Like…A Walk in the Summer Rain’ and ‘Like…A Million Miles Away’ (which smells like a Chanel offering!).
The low price point making them super affordable, the range making them versatile and the availability of these products, make Essence makeup the perfect gift idea in Malta. They’re affordable in pharmacies across the island. I personally get them in OVS in Sliema, Drugstore in Sliema or Tony’s Pharmacy in Gzira, but they’re available far and wide.
