I rant and rave quite a lot on this blog but today we have a HAPPY, POSITIVE REVIEW :) Now we’re in St Julians we found some new places for food and Ubistrot is our current favourite. Joe tried this first as they had an amazing deal offering a 3 course meal for €10 per person so his company had a work event there and he loved it so much we’ve been back quite a few times since!
The decor is adorable. There are shelves filled with flavoured tea bags, jams, oils and more. There is a large and well stocked bar/counter area with some bar stools so if all the tables are full you can usually still fit in there. There are tables outside and inside so depending on the weather you can either enjoy the sun or enjoy the warmth inside!
Their food is lovely, they’re all about looking after yourself, eating well, healthy living and being happy. The quote on their wall and business cards gave me goosebumps the first time I read it and I’ve not been able to forget it;
U must do something exciting everyday. U must enjoy your life. U must exercise. U only have one body, use it in any way U can. It’s the greatest instrument U will ever own. U must get plenty of calcium. U must care for your friends and family. Understand them. U are an individual. U an U alone make your own choices. Maybe U will get rich, maybe U won’t. U will fall in love. U win some U lose some. U must have a balanced, healthy diet. U are what U eat. Who are U?
Presentation clearly means a lot at Ubistrot and I love how they serve their meals on wooden or tile platters. It’s a real rustic touch and looks amazing. I can definitely recommend their burger. It’s huge, juicy and it comes with roast potatoes which are delicious. We’ve been about 5 times and only once were the potatoes a little over done, they’re also very salty which I don’t mind at all, but just consider tasting before adding salt of your own!
The baby chicken is also delicious although I’d have preferred it if it came with the whole chicken rather than carved. I felt that there was probably quite a bit of meat missing although how much meat can there really be on a baby chicken, I’m not sure.
Now- the cooked breakfast. It’s one of the most expensive cooked breakfasts on the island at €8.50 and the portion isn’t huge but it’s just perfect. Again, presented beautifully, I LOVE that the beans come in a small ramequin as I’m not too keen on beans and I hate hate hate it when they run all over the plate and make everything soggy and disgusting. You can choose to have the eggs scrambled or fried and both are lovely. It’s main big plus is that it comes with HASH BROWNS! Joe and I are addicted to these and it’s so rare to find them in a breakfast in Malta so we’re always happy to pay a little bit more for breakfast here.
The only negative I can say about this place is that the toilet is a bit of a let down. It’s clearly an after thought and it’s kind of grubby- the toilet itself is sparkling but the walls and the doors and the wall handles to help people with disabilities are all thick with dust. It could do with a lick of paint and a good clean so I’d recommend going before you leave the house. [Since posting this Ubistrot have contacted me thanking me for the review and genuinely pleased I brought the restroom to their attention and they have promised to look in to this :) truly great service!] But the service at Ubistrot is amazing, the staff are always so happy and friendly- super rare in Malta- so I know we’ll be going back again and again!
They even do a delivery menu– it’s not as fancy as the dine in menu but it’s great to have another delivery option for work days when you can’t get away from your computer or days when you just cannot be arsed to leave the house! Check out their website here or make sure you like them on facebook!
