Joe and I eat out a lot and we are disappointed 90% of the time. Service is generally bad in Malta and food is usually microwaved, bland and overpriced. So suffice to say we did not hold high hopes when we walked in Basilico which is part of The Waterfront Hotel in Gzira. How wrong we were. I’m just so sad that we left it 2 years to try it as we’re moving to St Julians in a few weeks! We’ll definitely be making the trip down though as the food was amazing and the staff were second to none.
You walk into the hotel and go up the stairs and enter a large, bright restaurant area. They have a number of different menus- the standard menu with pizza, pasta, salads and more, or they have a meat menu (and the food sounded amazing!) a specials menu and a set menu too. There is a lot of choice but each menu is quite compact so you’re not too overwhelmed.
Apologies for the crappy photos- I wasn’t intending on doing a review so only had my iphone on me and I just took a few rushed pics after tasting the food. I went for the spaghetti and meatballs and Joe went for a penne cajun chicken dish. Mine was really nice, although it could have done with being a little saucier. The meatballs were tasty and the sauce was nice and tomatoey but the real star of the show was the cajun chicken penne. Oh my god. Pasta is so often bland and uninteresting on this island (ironic!) but this dish was incredible. The flavour was intense but not over the top. It had a nice kick to it without being too spicy to enjoy and was just delicious!
The staff were really polite and friendly which is so rare in Malta. In fact it’s one of the things I hate most about this country- the people are, in general, pretty friendly, but those who work in service are just the worst. You’re lucky if the person serving you in a shop even acknowledges your existence- they’ll take your money but they wont make eye contact, say hello, tell you how much you owe or say goodbye. But these guys were super attentive, smiling and generally good at their job.
My only real complaint is that although they do bring over some bread, it was only 3 very small pieces but it’s free, damnit, so I can’t complain AND it stops me filling up before the food arrives! I’d absolutely recommend Basilico, especially their pasta and I can’t wait to go back and try some of their meat dishes!
