I’ve been a loyal customer to Cafe Cuba in Sliema for about two years and have never gotten around to reviewing it. I’ve always ummed and ahhed over it as some days you can go and it’s great, other days you can go and its utter shit. Well, I’m glad I never committed as I can now confirm, after two years, that overall this place is utter dog bollock.
The service is always slow. If you’re going on your lunch break you are going to need much more than an hour. The food is expensive and so-so in quality but today really did it for me.
They periodically run a breakfast offer where you can get a breakfast bagel (ham, egg and cheese) and a coffee for €2.75. This is a pretty good deal as the coffees themselves are pretty much that price. We go there for breakfast pretty much any day we’re off work, offer or no offer, but we’re always pleased when the offer is available.
For two years, when ordering the breakfast offer we’ve been asked by the staff what coffee we’d want and we’ve ordered anything from cappuccinos to lattes to mochas and it has never ever been a problem. Today we sit down, point at the table flyer which states;
and ask for lattes*. The food comes and its burnt but we eat around it, drink our coffees and go to pay. We’re asked for €7.50. We ask why. We’re told that the offer only covers Americano coffees. We question this and someone in a different coloured shirt comes over. They spend a few minutes with their backs to us, pressing buttons on the till and he then confirms to us that the offer only covers Americanos. We explain that, to order, we literally pointed at the flyer and the girl didn’t mention it when we asked for lattes. He shrugs and tells us-
A coffee is a coffee. A latte is a latte.
Well, he had us! How do you argue with such clear logic? We handed over the money- €2 difference is nothing, it’s just the point that really pissed me off – explained we’d been going there for two years, deal or no deal, and never had this issue and we certainly wont be coming again. The staff just turned their backs and ignored us. So we left, and we wont be going back. And I’d recommend you don’t either.
If they’re going to be specific about exactly WHAT coffee the offer covers then the least they can do is write that on the damn flyer, but they didn’t, but that’s not what gets me, its their complete unhelpfulness and lack of customer service. All they had to do was admit that the offer wasn’t clear and apologise and we’d have been happy. Or apologise that the waitress didn’t explain it properly and that they’d make sure she did next time. But they didn’t. Their attitude absolutely stunk and they just spoke to us like we were the retards.
