Your experience with working and finding a job in Malta will vary depending on the industry and the level of job you’re going for, so don’t take everything on this blog as gospel. It’s simply a collection of my experiences in my years of working here.
When looking for a job in Malta, there is plenty that you can do to proactively find work. Malta is known for it’s huge iGaming, tourism and financial sectors, so you’ll find most jobs will come under those industries, but whatever experience you have, read this guide to give yourself the best chance at finding your dream job in Malta and the best job interview tips to consider when applying for jobs in Malta.
– Word of Mouth
Malta is a super small island and one great way to get a new job (it’s worked for me!) is simply word of mouth. If you have friends and connections, let them know you’re looking and you may just find that they know someone, or know someone who knows someone and from a simple introduction you may end up with your dream job!
– Social Media
Sounds a bit odd maybe, but if you do a little searching online you’ll find loads of ‘job in Malta’ type groups on Facebook that you can join. Companies post their current availability and people post the kind of roles they’re after. There are also lots of expat forums online with a recruitment section, so keep a look out for those.
Whatever field you are in, when looking for work in Malta, do your research to see which companies on the island fit that category and contact them directly. Even if they’re not advertising for roles, it doesn’t mean they don’t need someone and if you have good experience or come across as proactive and hard working, they may just hire you anyway. This has worked for us more than once- we simply searched online for gaming companies located here (as our experience is in gaming) and sent them our CVs.
Malta is full of recruitment companies who dedicate themselves to pairing the right job seeker with the right company. These are free for job seekers to use, but remember that if companies use a recruiter, they have to pay a finders fee. You don’t need to worry about that but just bear it in mind as you really have to wow them in order for them to believe you’d be worth the (usually rather hefty) fee that they’ll have to pay. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, there will be a recruitment site for you. There are lots of iGaming focused recruitment sites in Malta, but also Quad Consultancy who have a number of roles from lots of different industries.
Wages in Malta
In most sectors in Malta, the wages are lower than you’ll find somewhere like the UK. I’m not sure what the minimum hourly wage is here in Malta but the minimum weekly wage is set to €166.26, which is pretty low if you need to pay rent and bills etc. Jobs such as shop cashier, room attendant in hotels, waiting jobs etc are likely to be very low paid, whereas jobs in finance, technology or iGaming are probably the same, or even higher than the UK when cost of living is taken into account.
When deciding whether to move to Malta, you really need to consider whether it’ll work for you, work wise. As I mentioned, jobs like cleaning, waiting and cashier work has pretty low pay so you might find it harder to get by than in other countries where the minimum wage is higher and it should be remembered that many local companies will prefer to hire a Maltese national, whereas foreign companies are more likely to look for expats.
There will be a lot of hotel, bar and restaurant work in the summer months. Although Malta is pretty much in holiday mode all year round, it’s busier when the weather is best, but these jobs aren’t secure and you may find yourself being paid cash in hand and not paying tax. Not only is this illegal, it also means you wont be eligible for things like free healthcare.
There is a strong gaming environment here in Malta with lots of online casinos and betting sites having offices here. Different companies have different departments bases here, but there are lots of jobs in customer support, payments, fraud plus more technical roles such as designers, programmers, technical support, database admins and more.
HSBC in Malta is almost always advertising for call centre staff but they very rarely hire. They have a very high staff turn over and like to keep the ball rolling so when they lose someone, they have someone to replace them almost immediately, but it means a lot of good people get rejected. If this happened to you, please don’t get disheartened, and in my opinion, don’t waste your time even interviewing. Apparently they’re very rigorous, set hard tests and checks, call you back for multiple interviews and still most probably wont hire.
If you’re interested in getting into iGaming but don’t have any experience, don’t fret, it is possible. It’s one of the best paid industries on the island and customer support is a good entry in. It is an ‘entry level’ role so wages are lower (from around €18,000 per year to €23,000) but you don’t always need experience, a lot of it will be based on dedication and personality.
My advice would be to learn as much as you can about gaming independently. If you don’t know anything about video slots, blackjack, roulette, bonuses then learn. Visit some online casinos, play the games for fun, read the rules, read up on bonuses. If you understand this kind of stuff you can include it in your cover letter and explain that although you don’t have experience in gaming, you are familiar with lots of casino games, understand verification processes and bonuses. It’s a good start!
Send your CV to gaming companies on the island, along with your cover letter and even without experience if you show drive and dedication, you could well end up with an interview where you just need to do your best to impress. Come across as friendly and social (but not a party animal) as well as dedicated and ready to learn.
Once you’re in, it’s your chance to shine. It can be much harder with large gaming companies, as it’s easy to get lost in a sea of employees but if it’s a smaller company, you will naturally progress into roles such as team leader or payments analyst. If it’s a big company, then at least you can take a year or so to get that experience you need then move into a better role elsewhere.
