Last Sunday some friends and I headed over to Cafe del Mar for their La Belle Musique event, which promised to be a sweet, soulful summery music event in Malta. Doors were set to open at 4PM but the place was nowhere near ready so instead of sweltering in the heat whilst the sunbathers from the day were still chilling on the sunbeds, we decided to head up to the Malta National Aquarium for some coffee and later on for some dinner.
Malta National Aquarium Restaurant
The food at the Malta National Aquarium restaurant was very disappointing. All 6 of us went for pizza and only one person got something that tasted good, but as Jeremy said; we weren’t paying much, we had food, wine, great company and a beautiful view, so you can’t feel too hard done by. Although, speaking of wine, the first bottle we got had little lumps of something floating in it, so we asked to change. The waiter sniffed it, said he thought it was fine (WTF with actual lumps in?!) but changed it for us regardless. So overall, I absolutely would not recommend eating there.
Cafe del Mar Sunset
What we did enjoy though, was the view of the sunset as we ate our tasteless food. I always love the sunset from Cafe del Mar, it’s never one to disappoint. It’s so intense and although the sun doesn’t descend directly into the sea, it still lights up the water around and just slowly falls behind the island.
La Belle Musique Event
We had a good time at the La Belle Musique event but mainly because of the people we were with and the stunning sunset. The music was good but it was much more ‘boom boom boom’ than sweet and soulful. The crowd in general was very young and very drunk. It was filled with clearly underage girls getting freaky with guys in the pool, huge lines at the toilets as there were young girls in the cubicles with men (no prizes for guessing what they were doing) and even groups of girls chasing strangers around the place begging for cocaine. The event was quite unorganised and the place was absolutely rammed, whilst the top VIP area was completely empty.
Usually we go VIP to events like these as it’s always more comfortable and a nicer experience but we decided we we’re going to go very late and all VIP tickets and tables were sold out. It was a good night for the music and if you have the right people around you, the atmosphere is always good, but if they hold a similar event again, I’d definitely recommend turning up much later and going VIP!
