Those of you in Malta may already be aware of Tex Mex but you may not know that it’s moved and had a total overhaul! It’s now situated along the strand where Gzira melts into Sliema without anyone noticing and it’s next to Black Gold and Med Asia.
I used to regularly go to Med Asia for my cocktail fix (oh I have many a hilarious story about that establishment!) but after a few staff changes we found that the service was painfully slow, sometimes rude and the cocktails were so strong they were undrinkable. So even with the 2-4-1 offer from 3pm – 7pm it just wasn’t worth it. Then along came Tex Mex!
They also run the 2-4-1 on cocktails promotion between 3pm-7pm every single day. You can even choose two different cocktails (all other bars I’ve tried, you have to just have the same one twice) and they’ll bring the second over when you’re ready, rather than have one melting whilst you drink t’other. Amaze. The cocktails are also extensive in variety and delicious in taste. They’re not too strong and I don’t think they’re ‘watered down’ as one often assumes during promo hours. I’ve found myself pleasantly tipsy after just two!
But Tex Mex is not just a bar, it’s a restaurant and they do a huge array of food. Like, too much food, it can be so hard to decide! With a “Mexican” feel, nachos, burritos, fajitas and tacos, but also with pizzas, pasta, salads, enormous sandwiches (you have to try the pig sandwich- pulled pork, bbq sauce and heaven), sharing platters, burgers, fish, meat dishes- chicken, steak, pork medallions, ribs… I could go on! The portions are enormous and so good.
Everything I’ve tried there, bar one meal, has been amazing. The meal I didn’t love was a Cajun Chicken Pasta dish- I found it a bit tasteless and bland but I’ve not really been into pasta much at all recently. Joe and I went with another couple recently and we got a variety of snack items- huge onion rings, 12 x chicken wings, chilli cheese fries (insane and amazing in equal measures) meatballs, nachos and cocktails and it only came to €11 per person.
They have some sort of special food deal every night (I think) and recently we took advantage of their Monday offer- buy one main meal and get a second for €5. FIVE EUROS. Joe went for the 400g Rib Eye Steak (€23.95) that comes with onion rings, jacket potato (or mash or fries or wedges) and a side salad (or roasted veg or coleslaw). My only criticism is the menu said “garnished with onion rings” and he only got one (he stole one of mine!).
I went for the Rib & Chicken Marriage (full slab) which should have been €18.95 but because of the offer, we paid full price for Joes and FIVE FREAKING EUROS for mine. The rack of ribs was indecently huge, came with 3 chicken wings (although the menu said 4- a touch disappointing), fries and 2 onion rings.
The decor inside is pretty cool, it’s quite darkly lit, with a few booths equipped with quilted red seating and a long bar area. Then if you continue inside and up a few steps there is further seating in a more restaurant style with heavy black tables and chairs. There is also an outside area, it’s covered with clear plastic and has gas heaters for the chillier evenings. It’s situated on a busyish road but is also just meters away from the marina so whilst the buses aren’t coming past, its a really lovely view.
The staff are on the whole really friendly and accommodating, the service usually fast and the prices are reasonable. If you are wanting a table on a weekend- BOOK. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings are absolutely packed full and it took us over 2 hours to get a table one weekend because we didn’t have the sense to book. We were happy enough to drink cocktails at the bar until something became available, but just a little warning!
They’re still quite new so expect a few teething problems- twice now they’ve had a powercut whilst I was in there, one was quite lengthy but they’re very apologetic and worked on it as fast as they could. One time Joe was in and a staff member tried to tell him that he had to have the same cocktail twice for the 2-4-1 but he insisted that wasn’t the case and got he correct drinks, I assume the girl was probably just new and didn’t realise.
But basically, I love this place!
Have you been to Tex Mex since it has moved?
If you go, be sure to mention the blog sent you, and let me know on Facebook!

Oh that food looks amazing!
Looks awesome, funnily enough I live near The Waterfront Hotel and I have not seen this place. Definitely a must try I think, the ribs look great, my kind of place…
