Banking in Malta

BLOODY BANIF!

All I ever seem to write about at the moment is the bank. I do apologise that the blogs got so boring recently!

My wages did finally clear, the bank still has no idea what I will be charged for going overdrawn, and still can’t explain how the bank let it happen. Telling me I had money AVAILABLE when apparently I didn’t.

But my wages finally arrived and I was happy. Until today. Seems their whole system has gone down. I tried logging onto my internet banking to check my balance but was told;

Very helpful. No information, no announcements on the site, no emails. I called up and was told they are having maintenance on the website which would take an hour and the gentleman kindly told me my balance. I ran to the cash point to withdraw and after waiting about 5 minutes receive a message that the bank cannot be contacted. Why he couldn’t have mentioned that on the phone too, I don’t know.

Hopefully the maintenance WILL only take an hour but if you’re a banif customer unable to withdraw YOUR money or get online- rest assured it’s not just you! I do have a niggling feeling though, after working in technology and internet fields for so many years, that the maintenance will definitely NOT only take an hour. Internet banking is annoying but not being able to access your money? Crippling!

    • I can, and will have to really! BOV is my only other option (APS wanted too many documents and I had a dispute with HSBC in UK and would never use them again!) but they’re only open when I’m working. I will have to take an early lunch one day and hope that work don’t mind if I’m a bit late back! Tis just an inconvenience but got to the point where it has to be done!

  2. I googled something in the lines of Banif sucks, banif is horrible and stumbled on your blog. Right now my girlfriend and I are both using Banif and they tend to fuck something up on daily basis, I have experienced all of the stuff you are talking about + a lot more. I’m so tired of calling their customer support and trying to even reason with them. Right now for no apparent reason, I can’t use my card, transfer money or basically do anything and it’s now the 3rd day like this in a row. Starvation kicking in soon and been drinking tap water, simply due to the fact that I cannot access the money that is mine. Their support says it’s something temporary, that is all the info they have. Even went to the bank itself and after waiting for 1 hour that the 3 ladies working there handled the one customer that was there besides me, all I got was “mela, something it can be like this you know? Wait some time and maybe it will work”

    • I am not surprised you’re having such troubles but I’m really sorry its so serious- not being able to access your money is horrific! If you are late on debt repayments you can be charged, if you are late with rent this builds bad relationships and not being able to have money to eat is just insane! Listen, I have a contact email of someone much higher up, whenever I had trouble once he got involved it usually got fixed much faster. If you want, email me joeandharryabroad@gmail.com and I will message you his email address and hopefully he can sort something for youu!
